ABOUT US
Qhawekazi is a proudly South African fashion brand inspired by the richness, beauty and diversity of African cultural heritage.
Our vision is to become a globally recognised designer brand, celebrated for our signature blend of elegant, timeless and contemporary ethnic fashion.
Qhawekazi creates distinctive garments that seamlessly combine traditional African aesthetics with modern fashion. Through vibrant fabrics, bold prints, contemporary silhouettes and quality craftsmanship, the brand enables women to express their individuality, cultural identity and confidence through fashion.
The name “Qhawekazi”, meaning “brave woman” in isiZulu, reflects the spirit at the heart of the brand — empowerment, strength, courage and resilience
Qhawekazi was born from founder Samukelisiwe Khanyile’s personal experience and a simple frustration — struggling to find clothing that complemented her skin tone, body shape and sense of style. What began as a side-hustle grew into a purpose-driven fashion business. Initially, Samke sourced dresses from different suppliers and sold them to clients. In October 2017, after recognising that many of her plussize customers faced the same challenge of limited choice and representation in mainstream retail, she decided to create her own collection.
Qhawekazi is committed to creating unique, timeless and versatile clothing without compromising on quality or workmanship. Our garments cater to the modern, dynamic woman and are designed for a variety of occasions, including: Everyday and leisure wear Corporate and professional attire Modern traditional weddings African and ethnic celebrations Matric dances Special occasions and events
Fashion That Respects the Planet Sustainability is embedded in the way Qhawekazi operates. We believe that fashion should create value without creating unnecessary waste. Fabric offcuts from our production process are therefore not simply discarded. Instead, they are transformed into new products such as: Off-cut garments Tote bags Bucket hats Headwraps Corporate folders Laptop bags
